Winifred Holtby, 1898 - 1935 Author / novelist. Originally born in Rudston, North Yorkshire. Wrote several books, including one based on her views and observations of the East Riding. Despite this, she proceeded to call it 'South Riding'. She doesn't appear to have particularly liked life in Cottingham, but did participate in some of the 'social activities' of the time. In actual fact, her mother could be more aptly placed in this 'famous people' section, being the first female Alderman on the East Yorkshire County Council. The Holtby family lived at a large house called 'Bainesse', on Thwaite Street, which has now been re-named Holtby House. If you can expand on these details, please drop us a line. Philip Larkin Poet. .. More to follow. William de Stuteville The 'de Stuteville' family had a good deal of involvement with 'Baynard Castle' in the village in the 11th - 13th centuries. In 1201, William must have been well in with somebody because he was granted a license to "enclose and fortify it". It also got a moat in 1272, and a double ditch enclosed by a wall in 1282. (There must have been a fair bit of 'trouble' around if it needed so much fortification, don't you think?).... Thomas Thompson Played a part in establishing New Village... More to follow.

He was baptised in St Mary's, but there's no great evidence of day-to-day involvement in the village. More notable were his activities in Hull, where he was Sheriff (by age of 33) and an alderman. His business was as an exporter / importer, of pretty much anything you can imagine. He married 22 year old Jane Richardson (whose father, Christopher Richardson, was one time Mayor of Hull) when he was 35. They had seven kids, and Jane died when she was 35 years old. Mark Kirby is credited with setting up the Free School in Cottingham in 1712. In fact, the school already existed at this time. Mark did, however, make an 'ongoing financial provision' for it through his will. There is a memorial in Holy Trinity Church to him, which describes him as.."affectionate husband, a kind father, a prudent economist, sincere in promising and punctual in performing".... A superb little reference book available in Cottingham library: "Mark Kirby and Cottingham Free School", John Whitehouse, 1980, Cottingham Local History Society.
