Cottingham Local History Society The Society was founded in 1952 with the aim of studying the history of Cottingham, and making it more widely known through talks, visits and publications.

Historic Cottingham Project In 2002 the Society set up its Historic Cottingham Project with the help of funding from the Local Heritage Initiative. One of its aims was to create digitally recorded archives of photographs and of oral memories of life in Cottingham. These are still ongoing and new contributions are always welcome. The Society has published many items about local history,

·    postcards, greetings cards and booklets

·    Cottingham in the 20th Century (2005), a history of Cottingham people, clubs, societies, religion, schools and government from 1900 (out of print)

·    Historic Cottingham Walk (2006), a leaflet giving a heritage trail around the centre of the village (still available, free from the Society and local shops etc)

·    The Cottingham Floods of June 2007 (2008), personal stories and full colour photographs of these events (still available, £9 from the Society)

·    A number of plaques have been placed around the village to commemorate some of the earlier buildings in King Street,

·    Primitive Methodist Church: now Modus

·    Kingtree House: now the shopping centre and flats

·    King Street Rooms at the corner of Finkle Street: now the shops and flats next to the Post Office

  Meetings

The Society meets in the Red Hall at Hallgate Primary School, Cottingham, on the first Wednesday of each month from October to April.

Meetings start at 7:30 pm.

Our programme of talks, often slide presentations, endeavours to cover aspects associated with the East Riding, with specific reference to Cottingham wherever possible. Visits are arranged during the summer period and our regular publication, “The Cottingham Local History Society Journal”, is provided as part of the subscription fee of Single £6.00 and Double £11.00. There is a meeting fee of £1 for members and £2 for visitors.

The Society’s badge is taken from the coat of arms that was granted in 1952 to the, now defunct, Haltemprice Urban District Council (1935-1974).
